Refugee Law

Refugees are individuals who are forced to flee their countries due to a well-founded fear of persecution. On June 4th, 1969, Canada signed the international Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Since then, it has proved itself to be a pioneer in welcoming persons in need of protection from around the world.

Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program

The Government of Canada works closely with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Sponsorship Agreement Holders, Groups of Five sponsors, and Community sponsors, to identify refugees in camps around the world and facilitate their resettlement in Canada.

Refugee Protection Program

This program allows individuals who are already in Canada, have well-founded fear of prosecution and are at risk of torture or cruel and unusual punishment in their home countries to apply for asylum.

Appeals

Refugee claims could be rejected for a variety of reasons. If this occurs, we carefully examine the reasons cited for refusing your claim and assist you with advancing an appeal to the Refugee Appeal Division or the Federal Court of Canada.
